Handlaftede tømmerhus er for mange det mest norske som finnes. Teknikken var kjent allerede i vikingtiden, men de færreste vet at våre forfedre sannsynligvis lærte den av sine russiske partnere. Noen av de eldste rester av laftede tømmerhus i Europa finner man i Russland og det er sannsynlig at norske vikinger tok med seg denne byggeskikken fra områdene rundt Novgorod. Byggeskikken ble etter hvert videreutviklet og det finnes i dag forskjellige "laftestilarter" fra landsdel til landsdel. Helt fra 1100-tallet har det her i landet vært vanlig å hogge skrå flater i knutene (kinning og laftehals) fordi dette er viktig for tettingen. Dette henger sammen med at treet kryper mest "på tvers" og derfor vil lafteknuten sige bedre sammen og kompensere for krympingen.
